Mansfield Public Schools Educator Spotlight: Robinson Elementary School Kindergarten Teacher
Scott Cohen
MANSFIELD – As part of Mansfield Public Schools' Educator Spotlight series,
Superintendent Teresa Murphy would like to recognize Robinson Elementary School
Kindergarten Teacher Scott Cohen for his years of service to Mansfield Public
Schools, commitment to his profession, and involvement as a world-class athlete.
Educator Spotlights highlight the important work that Mansfield Public Schools
employees perform daily, as well as their unique backgrounds.
Cohen has worked in Mansfield Public Schools for 26 years.
During his time in the district, Cohen has served as the President of the Mansfield
Educators Association (MEA) for 13 years. He has also previously served as the
unit’s Vice President and Professional Rights and Responsibilities Chairperson.
Cohen is focused on collaborating with district leaders, building positive
relationships and providing leadership assistance for the Robinson Elementary
administration team.
In addition to his longtime career as an educator, Cohen is a well-known figure and
world-class professional athlete in the sport of artistic roller skating. Cohen has
participated in the sport since 1973 and has won five world championship titles in
men's artistic roller skating free skating.
"Scott has been an integral part of our school district for many years. He is both a
talented educator and a world-class athlete," said Superintendent Murphy. "I am
extremely grateful for Scott's partnership with our administrative team over the last
decade-plus."
He currently holds the Guinness World Record for most titles won by a male singles
skater. Cohen has competed all across the world and has won several artistic roller
skating awards, as well as, silver and gold medals that stem back to 1983. His most
prestigious awards include: 1983 in Fort Worth, Texas; 1985 in Rimini, Italy; 1986 in
Bogotà, Colombia; 1989 in Roccaraso, Italy; 1990 in Hanau, Germany; 1991 in
Sydney, Australia; 1987 in Auckland, New Zealand; 1987 (silver) Pan Am Games in
Indianapolis, Indiana; and Cohen has won two gold medals in the Pan Am Games in
Havana, Cuba.
This month, Cohen returned from Rimini, Italy, where he won his first gold medal at
a world championship in 1985, to receive a special recognition for his career
achievements. This special recognition event is a first in the sport's history and is
only being given to athletes who have won at least three golds during their career in
artistic roller skating.
Cohen also spends his time as a professional artistic roller skating coach, instructing
those ages 3 to 83. Some of the athletes have even gone on to become state,
regional, national and world champions in the sport.
He holds a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in educational
leadership from Fitchburg State University and also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Spanish and a master’s degree in creative arts in education through Lesley
University.
"It has been one of my life’s privileges to serve the students, schools and community
of Mansfield for 26 years and I look forward to continuing that service here in
Mansfield until retirement," said Cohen. "To be recognized in the “educator spotlight”
is certainly an honor that adds to the many memorable moments I have had in
Mansfield as an educator. I believe every child can change the world, and that child
is yours."
